Apple Suing Mac Clone Company

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

After nearly four months, Mac clone company Pystar might be coming to an end. Alleging violation of its shrink wrap license, trademark and copyright infringement, Apple, Inc. has filed suit in the federal district court. Pystar began selling a computer called OpenMac, aka “Hackintosh”, which runs a “modified unauthorized version of the Leopard operating system” on a standard PC. While each copy of Mac OS X was legitimately purchased, Apple claims that Pystar had no right to modify its code for a PC and then distribute that modified code. Pystar’s products are “advertised and promoted in a manner that falsely and unfairly implies an affiliation with Apple.” What’s worse, Pystar’s computers are missing key elements like iLife, Bluetooth, IR Recever, DVD burning and the ability to update the computer.

Major Internet Security Flaw Leaked

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

A major flaw in the Internet’s Domain Name System (DNS) was discovered months ago but kept under wraps as software vendors attempted to patch the issue. Then a computer security company inadvertently published details of the flaw this month, weeks before they were supposed to be made public. The flaw, discovered by researcher Dan Kaminsky, can be exploited to poison DNS caches and re-direct Internet traffic to malicious sites. The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) has issued this list of workarounds and mitigation for the flaw.

Windows: Past, Present, Future

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Windows Vista is being adopted by more and more businesses, with usage by businesses up 40% since January. However, that’s still less than expected. In fact, it’s less than 10% of the companies surveyed by Forrester Research. And most of the business installs of Vista are from companies migrating from versions other than XP, which remains the most popular edition. Despite this demand, sales of Windows XP through Microsoft have been discontinued. (SoftwareMedia still has Windows XP in stock, for those interested). Looking to the future, Windows 7 development is on track and still slated for a January 2010 release. Microsoft remains relatively mum on Windows 7, in contrast to its pre-Vista strategy.

VMware Offering ESXi 3.5 for Free

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

The leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacenter is now providing a low-footprint copy of its #1 seller free of charge. VMware said it is offering its ESXi 3.5 software free, in response to pressure from competitors that are threatening its lead in the virtualization field. ESXi is a basic hypervisor, which is technology that separates the OS from server hardware so multiple OSes can run virtually on one physical server. ESXi is built for running virtual machines, minimizing configuration requirements and simplifying deployment. ESXi now incorporates a direct integration with the Virtual Appliance Marketplace to allow users to immediately download and run virtual appliances.

Keep in mind 3i is just the hypervisor, and end users will still need Virtual Center Management Server (VCMS) and Vi3 Foundation, Standard, or Enterprise. Contact the VMware Professional Partners at SoftwareMedia to fulfill your quote, or fill out this VMware Quote Form.
