New release: Filemaker 8.5
Tuesday, July 25th, 2006
At first glance, the new version of FileMaker appears to be a minor upgrade from last year’s 8.0, but a closer look shows some big enhancements. The new “Web Viewer”, integrates browser functionality into the database interface. An advanced script debugger allows developers to quickly track down and fix coding errors on the fly. Other improvements include increased speed, better PDF support and a vastly improved help and demonstration system. Visit FileMaker.

This is ultimately a matter of opinion, but has the new Apple television campaign gone too far? The commercials feature a laid-back, 20-something, casual guy (“I’m a Mac”) and a pudgy, middle-aged man in a suit (“I’m a PC”), conversing as if they were two computers. In one ad, the PC is sneezing - the result of exposure to thousands of viruses - while the Mac stands unafraid, declaring that he doesn’t get sick. The ads, portraying PC users as uptight dorks, come at an interesting time, with Apple’s hyped-up new ability to run Windows. What do you think? Click on the title to add your comments.
“This project is about learning, not about laptops,” says Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of the One Laptop per Child association. The program addresses shortage of computer access in the poor and rural areas of the world by providing $100 laptops purchased at cost. Negroponte continues to say, “No matter which global problem you are addressing … the solution always includes education.”
