Office Communications Server 2007 Standard Edition is appropriate for enterprises that do not require high availability through fail over and clustering. It provides the core Office Communications Server functionality of enterprise IM, Presence, Web conferencing, application sharing, and software-powered VoIP with these primary server roles installed on a single server.
The Office Communications Server user/device CAL is required for each user/device gaining access to the server, and entitles access rights to both editions of Office Communications Server. User CALs are likely to be more cost effective than Device CALs if there are multiple devices per user (for example, a user has a laptop and handheld computer accessing OCS)
Office Communications Server 2007 is licensed in the Server/Client Access License (CAL) model. Under this model, a Server License is required for each operating system environment running Office Communications Server 2007. A CAL is required for each user or device accessing Office Communications Server 2007. A minimum of 5 CALs is required.
