Microsoft HPC Server License through Open Value Licensing
Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 consists of a Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC Operating System License and a Windows HPC Pack 2008 R2 license for each server in the cluster (commonly referred to as head nodes or compute nodes). Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Suite is the third version of Microsoft’s solution for high performance computing (HPC). Built on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit technology, Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Suite makes it easier than ever for companies to benefit from high-performance computing. HPC Pack is the successor to the Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack which provides additional software for job scheduling, management, and high-speed networking.
Licensing
Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 is licensed per server. The software is licensed based on the number of instances of server software that you run. You may run, at any one time, one instance of the server software in one physical operating system environment and one instance in one virtual operating system environment on the licensed server.
Microsoft Open Value
This product is available through the Microsoft Open Value Program. This Open Value Paid Upfront sku means that you pay the amount of the license upfront. There are no other payments (unless you decide to add on additional terms of Software Assurance). Open Value gives you the rights to the license indefinitely. Software Assurance (SA) is included for the first three years which entitles you to any new editions that are released during those three years. Software Assurance also includes 24x7 support and exclusive access to Microsoft E-learning Online. After your three year term, you have the option to add on another three year term of Software Assurance to continue with access to support and the latest versions.

If you run both permitted instances at the same time, the instance of the server software running in the physical operating system environment may be used only to:
